Purchasing and renewing domains

Test mode

Buy a domain through runlot and we set up the DNS zone and the records your app needs at the same time.

Buying is not open yet. Purchases currently go to the registrar's test environment: the domain is not actually registered and nothing is charged. Real purchases open once the registrar is switched to production; payment, described below, is already in place for that day.

Both surfaces say so before they show you a price. The dashboard shows a test-mode banner on the search, the checkout and the domain list. runlot domains check prints the same line above the results, and runlot domains buy refuses while test mode is on — pass --sandbox to go ahead against the test environment on purpose.

runlot domains check example.com my-app.dev --org me
runlot domains buy example.com --years 1

--years accepts 1 to 10 years and defaults to 1. Provide registrant contact details with --contact-json <file>, or omit it and the command will prompt you.

When you purchase a domain, it is registered with runlot's nameservers already configured, and the DNS zone plus the records for connecting your app are created along with it. You can connect it to a project right after the purchase.

Payment

The price is the registrar's price for the first year, plus its renewal price for each further year. It is charged before anything is registered, because a registration cannot be undone.

  • With a saved payment method (you have paid for Pro or AI credit before), the card is charged at once and the command waits until the domain is registered.
  • Without one, or with --checkout, a checkout opens in your browser. The domain is registered as soon as the payment goes through, and the card is saved for renewals.
  • If the saved card is declined, nothing is registered. Run the same command with --checkout to pay with another card.
  • If the registrar refuses the name after you paid (someone registered it a moment earlier, for example), the payment is refunded in full.

Taxes are handled by Polar, our payment provider, according to your billing address. For some countries, Korea among them, VAT is included in the price shown.

Importing an existing domain

runlot domains import example.com

Listing and details

runlot domains list
runlot domains show example.com

The show command also displays recent history such as registrations, renewals, and transfer lock changes.

Renewals

Auto-renewal is on from the moment you buy. 30 days before the domain expires, one year at the registrar's renewal price is charged to your saved payment method, and the domain is renewed right after. If the charge is declined, it is retried 7 days and 1 day before expiry, and each declined attempt is emailed to your organization's admins. Update the payment method on the plan screen before the last attempt.

runlot domains auto-renew example.com off

With auto-renewal off, nothing is charged and the domain expires on its date. To renew early or for several years at once, renew it yourself; this is paid the same way as a purchase:

runlot domains renew example.com --years 2

Locks

runlot domains lock example.com
runlot domains unlock example.com

This is the domain transfer lock. When it's on, transfer requests to another registrar are rejected.

Transferring to another registrar

We don't restrict domain transfers. See Transfers for the procedure.
